The Breezy Summit Housing Initiative
Land, donated.
Terms, simple.
Neighbors, wanted.
Thanks to the wonderful generosity of the Johnson family, Main Street Elkader and the Housing Subcommittee have realized a dream to find a place for the future home of our neighbors. In 2023, Main Street Elkader's Economic Vitality Committee was awarded a Rural Housing Readiness Assessment Grant from the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Out of that came a housing committee, and out of the committee came an opportunity: 11 building lots on the summit, graciously donated by the Johnson family.
For decades Elkader's population has slowly declined. To turn that around, the City is opening 11 lots in Breezy Summit for new homes — and the initiative asks for one thing in return: that these lots become homes. Commit to building within 3 years, and the only bid required is $2,000.
- ▸Build a new single-family home or duplex.
